What is the average size of a school locker?

Last modified date

If you’re looking for school lockers, it’s important to consider the size of the average school locker and how much available space you have so that you can work on a floor plan and decide which type of school locker will be the best fit.

School lockers come in all shapes and sizes, but the average height of a school locker is approximately 1800mm tall and has an average width of 300mm (including the frame of the locker). In terms of the depth of a school locker, the common size is between 300mm to 400mm, however, as mentioned, the size of storage lockers and their compartments can vary across different styles depending on their designed purpose.

Lockers that fall out of the average size bracket include half-height school lockers which cater for primary school students, cube lockers that are designed to store smaller personal items (such as mobile phones, small bags, and keys), and laptop and charging lockers which are typically wider.

How tall is a half locker?

Half-height lockers are typically found in primary schools as they are much more accessible for younger students. The height of these school lockers is usually between 1300mm to 1500mm and their width is the same as standard lockers (300mm).

Which type of school locker should you choose?

If you’re looking for school lockers for sale, here are some questions that you can ask yourself to help determine which type of school locker will be appropriate for your school’s needs:

Who are the lockers going to be used by?

If you’re looking for high school lockers, most of our school locker range would be ideal for use by older students. If you’re looking for school lockers for primary school students, then you will need to consider accessibility – our half height lockers are perfect for younger students as they are much smaller than the average locker height.

How much available space do you have?

Here at Manutan, we have a range of space-efficient school lockers if you don’t have much room to spare. For instance, our cube lockers are ideal for areas with limited space as they are compact, versatile, and can be stacked in many different environments. You should also consider how many compartments each school locker unit has – for example, a locker with four compartments will be able to accommodate more students than a storage locker with a single door.

Another consideration for you to make is whether the lockers are fully welded or riveted. If you are looking at riveted lockers then you’ll have to factor in the gaps between lockers as if you are installing a high volume of school lockers, the gaps will soon add up, taking more space. Finally, the depth of each storage locker will also matter, particularly if you’re placing them in narrow corridors as you want students to open their locker doors with ease and not interrupt the traffic flow.

What is your budget?

Your budget will undoubtedly play a big part in which type of school locker you chose. Here at Manutan, our range of standard school lockers start from around £69.00 per unit and you may also find some of our storage lockers on offer.

What items will need to be stored?

You’ll need to think about what your students (or staff) will be using the lockers for. If it is just small bags and personal belongings then our standard lockers or cube lockers are perfect for the job. On the other hand, if you need school lockers for storing clothes and equipment you could consider lockers with fewer compartments and with ventilated doors to prevent any odours caused by used clothing.

Which colour will suit the school best?

School lockers offer educational institutes a uniform look and keep corridors tidy. Many products in our school locker range are available in a variety of colours, so you can choose the style that best represents your school.

Where will you place your lockers?

Where you place your lockers will depend on how much space you have and what you’re using them for but you may need to think about lockers better suited to the outdoors or wet areas such as plastic lockers.

Which material will be best?

As mentioned above, some materials are better for certain areas than others. Metal lockers can dent and rust over time, whereas plastic lockers will resist this and are waterproof, making them ideal for wet areas such as swimming pools. To maintain good hygiene, school lockers with an antibacterial coating will help to prevent the growth and spread of harmful bacteria.
